Why would a marketing company publish this? Because we don't want to make our money marking up hosting. We want to earn it doing work that actually grows your business. So here it is. All of it.

How much are you paying right now?

Contractor websites usually land in one of two buckets. Do-it-yourself builders like Wix or GoDaddy run $10 to $40 a month for the software, hosting, and basic security. If a web person or agency manages your site for you, that "hosting and maintenance" plan typically runs $50 to $200 a month. Here's the industry's own breakdown:

Average it all out and the typical contractor is paying about $75 a month. That's $900 a year, or about $2,700 every three years, for a website that mostly just sits there.

Here's the part that should bother you: the thing you're paying for costs almost nothing to provide. To understand why, you need to know why your site needs "hosting" in the first place.

Why everyone ended up on WordPress

Ten or fifteen years ago, WordPress was genuinely the right answer. Nobody knew how to code. WordPress meant a normal person could build a website, and more importantly, edit it later without calling a programmer. Roughly 40% of the internet runs on it. Your web guy didn't scam you by putting you on WordPress. It was the industry standard, and for good reason.

But WordPress came with a trade that nobody explained to you. To give you that friendly editing screen, WordPress has to run a small computer program on a server, 24 hours a day, with a database behind it. And that means:

• It's slow. Every visitor waits while the server assembles your page from the database.
• It gets hacked. WordPress is the most attacked software on the internet, because it's the most common. Plugins need constant security patches.
• It needs babysitting. Updates, backups, plugin conflicts. Somebody has to watch it.
• It costs money to run. A server working around the clock is the thing your hosting bill actually pays for. The babysitting is what the "maintenance plan" pays for.

The question that changes everything

When did you last change your website?

Be honest. For most contractors it was months ago, maybe over a year. And that is the entire con, right there. The one thing WordPress gives you in exchange for all those downsides is easy editing. If you edit your site twice a year, you are carrying 100% of the cost and the risk for a feature you use twice.

A plumber wouldn't tell a homeowner to rent a $60-a-month water softener for a house with no hard water problem. That's what a monthly website plan is for a site that never changes.

The secret: your website is just files

Strip away WordPress and what's left is what your visitors actually see: pages, photos, text. Plain HTML files. Files don't need a running server, a database, or security patches. They just need to sit somewhere and get handed to visitors.

"But I can't edit an HTML site" (yes, you can)

This used to be the real catch. Plain HTML was cheap to host but you needed a coder to change a phone number. That objection died when AI showed up.

Today you open a free AI tool like Claude or ChatGPT, hand it your file, and type "change the phone number to (208) 555-0147" or "add Post Falls to the service area list." It makes the edit. You upload the folder again, which is literally dragging it into a box:

Why we're giving this away

Because I'm a contractor too, and I want my fellow contractors to take advantage of this. Hosting used to be real work worth paying for, but the technology changed, and storing your files now costs pennies. What actually moves the needle for a contractor is ranking on Google, running ads that turn a profit, and a website built to convert visitors into phone calls.
