Chuck Kile started going to job sites at age 6 with his dad's remodeling company. By the time he was 27, he'd spent over 20 years in construction and had worked his way up to superintendent at Murray Hill Remodeling in Portland—doing high-end remodels for Nike executives and managing complex projects most guys twice his age wouldn't touch.
When the pipeline dried up, Chuck didn't wait around for referrals. He taught himself marketing and sales from scratch to save the business. The results were immediate—leads started coming in, the phone started ringing, and other contractors started asking how he did it.
Then came the moment that changed everything. While demoing a flooded house, Chuck had to reset the same disgusting toilet—every single day—for six days straight. On day six, standing in that mess, he realized something: he was more valuable to contractors by solving their marketing problems than by wrestling with plumbing. He gave his boss two months' notice and asked him to be his first client. Murray Hill said yes. Eight years later, they're still a client.
